Learn About Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine

DAN News
Learn About Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine

You are invited to the 59th DAN Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to extend an invitation to you to attend the 59th DAN course on diving and hyperbaric medicine. The course will be held May 5 through 12, 2007, at the Beaches Resort and Spa, on Providenciales, in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This is a beautiful location, with miles of pristine white beaches and natural reefs surrounded by transparent waters in hundreds of shades of turquoise.

But it's the course we're excited about as well.

The international faculty is highly experienced and uniquely qualified to present the chosen topics. The curriculum will provide a thorough, evidenced-based foundation in the core concepts of diving and hyperbaric medicine including:

An introduction to the physics of diving;

the diagnosis and treatment of common diving-related medical disorders such as DCS, barotrauma; and

injuries from marine animals.

A mechanistic approach to hyperbaric oxygen indications and treatment; and

A review of the strategies used by physicians to determine fitness to dive for recreational diving candidates.

These concepts will be reinforced by case reports from the DAN Medical Services Call Center (MSCC) Quality Assurance archives.

In addition, this course will go beyond the usual dive medicine topics to discuss challenges to human physiology posed by venturing into in austere environments including:

Diving at altitude and in polar conditions;

Diving to extremes of depth and time exposure; and

Diving and other medical emergencies encountered under combat conditions.

We will also review recent scientific research in diving and hyperbaric medicine;

including emerging concepts in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of DCS; plus

the evolving status of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Finally, you will have the opportunity to directly participate in DAN diving research through both Project Dive Exploration and ongoing research on Eustachian tube function.

We hope to see you at the course.

John J. Freiberger, M.D., Course Director

Emergency Response Diving International (ERDI) (Public Safety Diving) ERD I course - McCall Idaho - August 2006

McCall (Idaho) Fire/Dive Rescue Team is hosting an Emergency Response Diving International (ERDI) ERD I course in McCall, Idaho from August 11, 12 and 13, 2006.

For more details email omnidive@omnidivers.com about course fees, times, and equipment needs, etc.

The following is a brief outline of the course:

ERD I (Emergency Response Diver I)

This entry level emergency response diving course is designed to give the public safety diver the fundamental skills needed to safely function as part of a public safety dive team. This course is OSHA and NFPA compliant as is with all other ERDI courses.

Topics such as:

problem solving
tender skills
search patterns
evidence handling
are covered just to name a few.

Dive skills include:

executing search patterns
victim recovery
decontamination procedures
among others.

ERD I also serves as a prerequisite to ERD I Ops Components courses.

ERD I Ops Components

ERD Drysuit Ops
ERD Ice Diving Ops
ERD Full Face Mask Ops
ERD Night Ops
ERD Small Boat Ops
ERD U/W Crime Investigation

The ERD Tender course is being held at the same time.

ERD Tender

This course is designed to introduce the public safety professional to the ERD Tender skills necessary to participate in public safety diving operations in a non-diving roll. Successful completion results in the ERD Tender certification.

The ERD Tender course can be taught in conjunction with the ERD I course. While the ERD Tender course is a non-diving course, the tender student should have a working knowledge of diving physics, physiology, techniques, and equipment.
